Netflix Review |
| Netflix is the founding father of online DVD rental services, and still king! |
The Netflix online DVD rental service is famous for their speed and quality. On the internet, Netflix’s reputation far exceeds Blockbuster. Most claim better customer service and delivery times with Netflix.
Netflix was the first major online DVD rental service, with Blockbuster launching their own after seeing the success of Netflix. That said, Netflix doesn’t have the infrastructure advantage Blockbuster does. Their main disadvantage is that they don’t have any stores like Blockbuster, but don’t let this bias you; this could perhaps be their greatest advantage.
Consider this: Netflix is ONLY an internet DVD rental service so you can expect that service to be performed better: every effort will be made towards improving the Netflix service, as it is the only way for Netflix to increase revenues. Whereas with Blockbuster, they are too busy turning their local stores into a Best Buy type business model that perhaps they haven’t been bothered to improve their online rental service. I can’t even find a 1 800 phone number for blockbuster on their website, and you certainly can’t expect support for the online issues from a local store (as they are not “trained” or able to deal with it).
Whereas with Netflix most internet users seem to agree that they provide excellent customer service, and quick delivery of the movies.
Netflix does have a larger DVD collection with over 110,000 DVD titles to choose from, whereas Blockbuster only has 85,000. Let’s take a look at those numbers as they are so large some might not think to care. However, with 25,000 more Netflix has 30% more movies than Blockbuster does! This means you have a much better chance of finding those hard-to-find DVD movies. Not only that, Netflix keeps a larger inventory of movies on hand, which means there is more to go around! That means faster delivery times. Netflix especially has a far better reputation on getting out “New Releases” quicker.
While Blockbuster’s online DVD rental service is still fledgling, Netflix has built up a reputable name for their service’s speed, delivery, and the quality of the DVDs sent. Netflix, in order to avoid a price war, has the same regular prices as Blockbuster. Yet Netflix also offers random promotions from time to time, so it is possible pick up a better promotional rate with Netflix than with Blockbuster. The promotion rates usually only last for a few months or so, after which you pay the normal price. For instance, right now Netflix is offering an introductory rate of $4.99 a month.
